Tetany Syndrome Treatment

Muscle twitching, tingling around the mouth, heart palpitations, or a feeling of shortness of breath? These symptoms are often caused by tetany – a disorder of increased neuromuscular excitability. We diagnose it with an EMG examination and provide treatment under one roof.

Frequently asked questions about tetany

Can tetany be completely cured?

It depends on the cause. If it is caused by magnesium deficiency or other mineral imbalances, the symptoms may significantly improve or disappear completely once these are corrected. If long-term stress or another condition contributes to it, treatment is more complex. With properly adjusted therapy, however, most patients achieve a significant improvement in their quality of life.

Is tetany dangerous?

In most cases it is not a life-threatening condition, but it can significantly reduce your quality of life. Since similar symptoms may also signal other health problems, it is important to undergo a professional neurological examination.

How long does an EMG examination take?

Usually 20 to 30 minutes. Come with a full stomach and stop taking magnesium supplements two days in advance – otherwise no preparation is needed. After the examination you can return to your normal activities immediately.

Can tetany cause heart palpitations?

Yes, heart palpitations are among the common symptoms. Since similar symptoms can also be related to heart conditions, it is important to undergo a professional examination to determine their true cause.

Is tetany a mental illness?

No. It is a disorder of increased neuromuscular excitability. Psychological stress can worsen the symptoms or trigger attacks, but this does not mean it is a mental illness. The diagnosis is made by a neurologist based on a clinical examination and EMG.

Can magnesium deficiency be the cause?

Yes, magnesium deficiency is one of the most common factors. However, not every patient with tetany has it – there can be several causes, which is why professional diagnosis is important.
